Records of Cristina Puglisi, 1991-2019

 Series

Scope and Contents

These records include subject files created by Cristina Puglisi from 1991 to 2019 during her time as the key staff person in Academy operations. They contain administrative records of many of the renovation and restoration projects she managed on the Academy's Rome campus as well as records about various operations of the Academy's New York office such as the work of the Academy's Preservation Task Force, its computer network, and office construction work. Approximately half of the records organized alphabetically are labeled "Plant and Planning" or "Plant, Planning and Preservation." These folders, arranged in reverse chronological order from 2019 to 1994, variously contain agendas, minutes, materials for discussion (sometime including schematic designs for various Academy buildings being renovated and refurbished), and handwritten notes from meetings of the Academy's Board of Trustees Plant, Planning and Preservation Committee (prior to 2004 called the Plant and Planning Committee). Ms. Puglisi served as Staff Liaison to the Committee, which principally concerned itself with the Academy's properties in Rome. The contents of these folders are incomplete, but they likely supplement the records of Executive Vice President Wayne Linker who also served on this Committee. The folders of this Committee's meetings are restricted as confidential because it is a committee of the Academy's Board of Trustees. Ms. Puglisi's records contain many architectural materials such as preliminary surveys, design schemes, site plans, and floor plans. Plans and drawings for the renovations of the library and Villa Aurelia are most numerous, but Ms. Puglisi also oversaw the preservation and/or renovation of the following Academy buildings and spaces: McKim, Mead and White Building, the Barbara Goldsmith Rare Book Room, Villino Bellacci, Casa Rustica, and Villa Chiaraviglio. More extensive records of the preservation and/or renovation of the latter facilities may be included in records housed in the Academy's archives in Rome.

Biographical / Historical

Ms. Puglisi, an American-trained preservationist who has worked for years in her native Italy, began working at the Academy in 1991. She was instrumental in managing the work to restore the Academy's facilities and grounds, and in maintaining its 11-acre campus in Rome. She managed numerous projects that shaped the campus, the largest of which were the complete restoration and modernization of the McKim, Mead and White Building and Villa Aurelia, as well as their surrounding gardens. She managed the renovation of the Arthur and Janet C. Ross Library, working with architect Michael Graves on the Barbara Goldsmith Rare Book Room. In addition, Ms. Puglisi oversaw the preservation and/or renovation of three other Academy properties – Villino Bellacci, Casa Rustica, and Villa Chiaraviglio – as well as the construction of the Photographic Archives and the room housing the Archaeological Study Collection.
